Does my printer support AirPrint?
Answer four quick questions. If your printer supports AirPrint, it prints from iPhone without drivers — and works with the Printer app.
Three ways to check AirPrint support
-
Try it on your iPhone
This is the definitive test. Make sure the printer is on and both devices are on the same Wi-Fi. Open a photo, tap Share → Print, then Printer. If your printer appears, it supports AirPrint. If the list says No AirPrint Printers Found, the printer may still support it — it might just be on a different network. Here’s how to fix that.
-
Search Apple’s official list
Apple keeps a searchable list of AirPrint printers, supplied by the manufacturers. Open Apple’s AirPrint search, choose Model or Brand, and type your printer’s name. Apple notes that if your printer isn’t listed, you should check with the manufacturer.
-
Check the maker’s specs
Search for your exact model on the manufacturer’s website and look for “AirPrint” or “Apple AirPrint” under mobile printing or connectivity. The model name is usually on the front or top of the printer, and the full model number is on a sticker on the back or bottom.
If your printer doesn’t support AirPrint
You still have options — they just aren’t the Printer app:
- Use the maker’s app. HP, Epson, Canon and Brother apps can print to many of their Wi-Fi printers without AirPrint. See the guides for HP, Epson, Canon and Brother.
- Share it from a Mac. Some Mac setups can share a USB printer to iPhone, sometimes only with an AirPrint-sharing app. Results vary, and the Mac has to stay on.
- Consider a newer printer. Most current Wi-Fi printers from the big brands include AirPrint, including inexpensive ones.
Questions people ask
What is AirPrint?
AirPrint is Apple’s built-in way to print from iPhone, iPad and Mac without installing drivers. The printer announces itself on your Wi-Fi network, and your iPhone sends the job straight to it.
My printer isn’t on Apple’s list. Does that mean it won’t work?
Not always. Apple’s list comes from the manufacturers and may miss some models. The quick test on your iPhone (Share → Print → Printer) is the most reliable check. If your printer shows up there, it works.
Can I add AirPrint to a printer that doesn’t have it?
Not to the printer itself. If it connects to Wi-Fi, the maker’s own app may still print to it. Some Mac setups can share a USB printer to iPhone, sometimes only with an AirPrint-sharing app. Results vary, and the Mac has to stay on.
Does AirPrint need internet?
No. AirPrint works over your local network. Your iPhone and printer only need to be on the same Wi-Fi, or connected with Wi-Fi Direct. See print without Wi-Fi.
Will the Printer app work if my printer supports AirPrint?
Yes. Printer prints only through AirPrint, so any printer that passes this check will work with it. If your printer doesn’t support AirPrint, Printer won’t be able to print to it, and we’d rather you know before you download.
