Print job stuck on iPhone? How to clear it
Written for iOS 26 and iOS 27 Updated By The Printer team
Quick answer
While a job is printing, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to open the App Switcher, then tap Print Center. Tap the job and choose Cancel Printing. If the job is already in the printer’s queue, press the printer’s Cancel or Stop button, restart the printer, then print again.
What you’ll need
- Your iPhone and the printer on the same Wi-Fi network
- A minute at the printer, in case the job has to be cancelled there
A print job that sits on Waiting or Printing almost always has one of three causes: the printer is asleep or showing an error, the job is too heavy for it, or the printer lost the Wi-Fi connection halfway through. Work through the steps below in order. Most people are done after the second one.
1. Find the job in Print Center
Print Center is where iOS keeps jobs that haven’t finished sending. It isn’t an app on your Home Screen. It only shows up in the App Switcher while something is printing.
-
Open the App Switcher
On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause in the middle of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
-
Tap Print Center
Swipe through the app cards until you see Print Center and tap it. You’ll see the document name, the printer, the number of copies and the job’s status.
-
Cancel the job
Tap the job, then tap Cancel Printing. If several jobs are queued, cancel each one, starting with the oldest. A stuck job at the front blocks everything behind it.
No Print Center in the App Switcher?
That means your iPhone has already handed the whole job to the printer. Nothing is stuck on the phone anymore, so skip to step 3 and clear it on the printer.
2. Wake the printer and read its screen
A printer that went to sleep, ran out of paper or has an error will accept a job and then sit on it. Walk over and check:
- The printer is on and awake. Press any button or tap its screen. Some printers drop off Wi-Fi in deep sleep.
- There’s paper in the tray you chose, in the right size. A 4 × 6 photo sent to an A4 tray can stall.
- No error lights or messages. Empty ink cartridge, open cover, paper jam: fix what the printer asks for first.
- The Wi-Fi light is solid, not blinking. A blinking light usually means the printer lost the network.
Often the job starts by itself as soon as the problem is cleared. If it doesn’t, keep going.
3. Clear the printer’s own queue
If the job already left your iPhone, cancel it on the printer.
-
Press Cancel or Stop on the printer
Most printers have a ✕, Cancel or Stop button, or a job list on the touchscreen (often under Job Status, Print Jobs or a printer icon). Cancel every job you see.
-
Restart the printer
Turn it off with its power button, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Wait until it reconnects to Wi-Fi (the Wi-Fi light stops blinking) before printing again. A restart clears most queues.
-
Print again, small
Send a single page first, such as one photo or a one-page PDF. If that works, the printer is fine and the original file was simply too heavy. See the tip below.
4. If the same file gets stuck again
Large scans, long PDFs and full-resolution photos take a long time to send over Wi-Fi, and some home printers time out halfway through. Try one of these:
- Print fewer pages at a time. Choose a page range in the print options, or select only the pages you need in Printer before tapping Print.
- Print a lighter version. A screenshot of a web page or a scanned page saved as a PDF is usually much smaller than the original.
- Move closer to the router. A weak signal between the printer and router slows the job down until it times out.
5. Reset the connection
If nothing prints at all, not even a single page, the problem is the connection, not the job.
-
Toggle Wi-Fi on your iPhone
Open Settings → Wi-Fi, turn it off, wait ten seconds and turn it back on. Make sure you rejoin the same network the printer is on, not a guest or 5 GHz-only network the printer can’t see.
-
Restart your iPhone
Restarting usually clears any jobs still waiting on your iPhone.
-
Check that the printer still appears
Open any photo, tap Share → Print and tap Printer. If your printer isn’t in the list, follow our guide to fix “iPhone can’t find printer”.
Test with a simple page
Use our free printer test page. It’s a light, single-page PDF, so it tells you within seconds whether the printer, the connection or the original file is the problem.
Questions people ask
Where is Print Center on iPhone?
Print Center isn’t an app on your Home Screen. It only appears in the App Switcher while a document is printing or waiting to print. Open the App Switcher and swipe through the cards to find it.
Why don’t I see Print Center at all?
If Print Center isn’t in the App Switcher, there are no jobs left waiting on your iPhone. A job that is still stuck most likely lives in the printer’s own queue, so cancel it on the printer’s control panel or by restarting the printer.
Can I cancel just one page of a print job?
No. Print Center cancels the whole job. To print part of a document, cancel the job and print again with a page range. In Printer, open the document and tick only the pages you want before you tap Print.
Is a stuck print job bad for my printer?
No. A job that never starts doesn’t harm the printer. Paper jams are different. If the printer reports a jam, follow its on-screen instructions to remove the paper before printing again.
