Print from iPhone to an HP printer

Written for iOS 26 and iOS 27 Updated By The Printer team

Quick answer

Most HP printers with Wi-Fi support AirPrint, so your iPhone can print to them without any app. Put the printer on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone, tap Share → Print, and choose it. HP Smart is no longer available to download, and the new HP app needs you to sign in for full functionality. Printer works without an account.

What you’ll need

  • An HP printer with Wi-Fi that supports AirPrint
  • Your iPhone and the printer on the same Wi-Fi network
  • The printer’s control panel, or the HP app, if the printer isn’t on Wi-Fi yet

HP is one of the biggest names in home printing, and most of its Wi-Fi models work with an iPhone out of the box. The catch in 2026 is the app situation: HP Smart is gone from the App Store, and the HP app that replaced it asks you to sign in for its full set of features. The good news is that you don’t need either one just to print.

Three ways to print to an HP printer

You can print from your iPhone to an HP printer in three ways. They all use the same Wi-Fi connection, so pick the one that fits what you’re printing.

AirPrint (built into iOS) HP app Printer app
Account needed No Not to use it, but sign-in is required for full functionality (per HP) No
Cost Free Free Free to download; Printer Pro subscription unlocks unlimited prints, Pro tools and watermark-free printing
Works with HP printers that support AirPrint Supported HP devices Any AirPrint printer, any brand
Best for Quick prints from Photos, Safari, Files and Mail First-time Wi-Fi setup, ink levels, scanning from the printer’s glass Scanning with your camera, signing, picking pages, notes, web pages and contacts

AirPrint is built into iOS. Any app with a Share button can print, and there’s nothing to install.

The HP app replaced HP Smart. HP says it combines HP Smart and myHP, and that not every HP device is supported in it. One more HP detail: models ending in “e” (like the DeskJet 2755e) are HP+ eligible. If HP+ was activated during setup, HP requires an HP account and keeps the printer online — but printing from your iPhone still goes over AirPrint on your local network. If you used HP Smart for printing alone, our HP Smart alternative page compares your options side by side.

Printer is our app. It prints to HP printers over AirPrint, so it needs no HP account, no drivers and shows no ads. It adds the things AirPrint doesn’t do on its own: a document scanner, signing and markup, page selection, and printing notes, web pages and contact cards.

When the HP app is the better choice

Printer prints only over AirPrint. For first-time Wi-Fi setup on a printer with no screen, checking ink levels, firmware updates, scanning from the printer’s own glass, or managing HP services such as Instant Ink, the HP app is the right tool.

Check that your HP printer supports AirPrint

Most recent HP printers with Wi-Fi support AirPrint, but not every model does. Some basic LaserJet models connect over USB only, for example. Check before you buy an app or spend an evening on settings:

  • Our AirPrint checker walks you through it in about 30 seconds.
  • Apple’s official AirPrint search lists printers the manufacturer has certified. Apple notes that if a printer isn’t listed, you should check with the manufacturer.
  • The iPhone test. Open any photo, tap Share → Print, then tap Printer. If your HP printer appears in the list, it supports AirPrint and you’re ready.

Connect your HP printer to Wi-Fi

Skip this if the printer already shows a steady Wi-Fi connection.

  1. Use the printer’s control panel

On HP printers with a touchscreen, open the Wireless or Wi-Fi settings and run the Wireless Setup Wizard. Choose your network and enter its password.

  2. No screen? Use WPS or the HP app

Many HP printers without a screen can join with WPS: press the WPS button on your router, then start WPS on the printer. The button combination varies by model, so check your printer’s manual. Otherwise, use the HP app once for first-time setup. You won’t need it afterwards to print.

  3. Put your iPhone on the same network

Open Settings → Wi-Fi on your iPhone and join the network the printer is on. Avoid guest networks, which often keep devices apart. If your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try joining the same one as the printer.

  1. Open what you want to print

A photo in Photos, a PDF in Files, a page in Safari or an email in Mail.

  2. Tap Share → Print

In some apps, Print is under the More (•••) button instead.

  3. Choose your HP printer

Tap Printer and pick your HP from the list. Set the copies, page range and color, then tap Print.

The full walkthrough, with the options explained, is in our guide on how to print from iPhone.

  1. Choose HP and your model

The first time you open Printer, pick your printer’s brand and model. Printer finds it on your Wi-Fi and confirms when it’s ready.

  2. Pick what to print

Scan a document with the camera, or choose photos, files, a note, a web page or a contact card.

  3. Check the pages and print

Select only the pages you need, sign or crop if you have to, then tap Print.

Printer is free to download. Printer Pro, a weekly or annual subscription with a 3-day free trial, unlocks unlimited prints and scans, Pro tools like QR codes, and printing without a watermark.

Common HP problems

  • “No AirPrint Printers Found.” Usually a sleeping printer or a network mismatch. See fix “No AirPrint Printers Found”.
  • The printer doesn’t show up at all, or shows as offline. Restart the printer and router, then check that both devices share a network. See iPhone can’t find printer.
  • The job sits on “Waiting” or “Printing.” Cancel it in Print Center and clear the printer’s queue. See print job stuck.
  • No Wi-Fi where the printer is. Many HP printers support Wi-Fi Direct, which connects your iPhone straight to the printer. See print from iPhone without Wi-Fi.

Most recent Wi-Fi models in these series support AirPrint, but always check your exact model.

Series Type Notes
DeskJet Budget home inkjet, often all-in-one Common in homes and dorms; most Wi-Fi models print from iPhone with AirPrint
ENVY Home inkjet all-in-one Good for photos and everyday documents
OfficeJet and OfficeJet Pro Home-office inkjet all-in-one Often include Wi-Fi Direct and automatic two-sided printing
Smart Tank Refillable ink tank inkjet Low cost per page; check Wi-Fi support on your model
LaserJet Black-and-white or color laser Wireless models usually work with AirPrint; some basic models are USB-only

Not sure which one you have? The model name is on the front or top of the printer, and on a label on the back. Then run it through our AirPrint checker.

Questions people ask

Can I print to an HP printer from my iPhone without the HP app?

Yes, if the printer supports AirPrint. Put it on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone, open what you want to print, tap Share → Print and pick the printer. No app, driver or account is involved. Not sure about your model? Use our AirPrint checker.

Do I need an HP account to print from my iPhone?

Not for AirPrint, and not for Printer. HP says you don’t need an HP account to use the HP app, but signing in is required for full functionality. If you just want to print, an account isn’t necessary.

Where did HP Smart go?

HP Smart is no longer available to download. HP replaced it with the HP app, which combines HP Smart and myHP. We compare the HP app with the alternatives on our HP Smart alternative page.

Why does my iPhone say “No AirPrint Printers Found” for my HP printer?

Usually the printer is asleep, off the network, or on a different Wi-Fi network from your iPhone. Wake it, check its Wi-Fi light or screen, and make sure both devices are on the same network. Our step-by-step fix covers the rest.

Can Printer scan from my HP printer’s scanner glass?

No. Printer scans with your iPhone’s camera and finds the page edges automatically, which is quicker for most documents. To scan from the printer’s own glass or feeder to your iPhone, use the HP app.
