iPhone can’t find your printer? Checks in order
Written for iOS 26 and iOS 27 Updated By The Printer team
Quick answer
First match what you see: an empty printer list, a printer that appears and then vanishes, or a printer that shows up but won’t print. For all three, wake the printer, put it and your iPhone on the same Wi-Fi, and restart the router, printer and iPhone in that order. Then follow the matching section below.
What you’ll need
- Your iPhone and the printer, both switched on
- Your Wi-Fi password and access to the router
- The printer’s control panel or a printed network configuration page
“My iPhone can’t find the printer” can mean a few different things, and each one has a different fix. Spend ten seconds working out which one you have. It saves you from trying every fix on the internet.
First, what exactly do you see?
| What happens | Most likely cause | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| The printer list says No AirPrint Printers Found | iPhone can’t see any AirPrint printer on its network | Fix “No AirPrint Printers Found” |
| The printer appears, then disappears | Sleep mode, weak Wi-Fi or a changing IP address | Steps 1–5 below |
| The printer appears but nothing prints | The job is stuck, not the connection | Print job stuck on iPhone |
| It’s a new printer, or it was never on Wi-Fi | The printer itself isn’t connected | “Get the printer on Wi-Fi first” below |
| The printer only has USB, or no AirPrint | iPhone can’t print to it directly | AirPrint checker |
If you’re not sure, start at step 1 and work down.
1. Check the printer is awake and online
- The printer is on and awake. Press a button or tap the screen. Many printers drop off Wi-Fi in deep sleep.
- The Wi-Fi light is solid. Blinking usually means it’s still connecting or lost the network.
- No error on the display. Paper jams, an open cover or a setup screen can stop the printer from announcing itself.
- It supports AirPrint. Not sure? Run the AirPrint checker.
2. Match the network on both devices
AirPrint only finds printers on the same network as your iPhone. On the printer, open its Network or Wi-Fi status menu, or print a network configuration page, and note the network name (SSID). On your iPhone, open Settings → Wi-Fi. The names must match exactly.
Watch out for the usual traps:
- Guest networks keep devices apart on purpose. Put both on the main network.
- “Home” vs “Home-5G”. Many printers only use 2.4 GHz. If your router splits the bands into two names, join the one the printer uses.
- Mesh systems and extenders with band steering can move your iPhone between bands or satellites. That’s fine on one network, but a separate extender network acts like a different network.
- A VPN on your iPhone can route traffic away from your home network. Turn it off while you print.
3. Stop the printer from vanishing
If the printer appears and then disappears, the printer is usually falling off the network, not your iPhone.
-
Relax the sleep settings
In the printer’s settings, look for Sleep, Auto Off or Energy Saving. Keep normal sleep, but turn off “auto off” or the deepest power-saving mode so Wi-Fi stays connected.
-
Improve the signal
Move the printer closer to the router, or the router away from walls and metal. A printer at the edge of your Wi-Fi keeps dropping and reconnecting, and every time it does, your iPhone loses sight of it for a moment.
-
Reserve the printer’s IP address
In your router’s app or settings page, find the printer in the list of connected devices and choose Reserve IP, DHCP reservation or Always use this address. AirPrint finds printers by name, not address, but a fixed address helps computers and apps that saved the printer by IP, and makes the printer’s settings page easy to find.
4. Allow Local Network access for printing apps
Apple’s own print dialog finds printers on its own, but any other app that searches for printers needs permission. If Photos can print but an app can’t, this is likely why.
Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and switch the app on. The Printer app asks for this permission so it can find AirPrint printers on the Wi-Fi you’re connected to. It looks for standard printer announcements and nothing else.
5. Restart everything, in this order
- Router. Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait until the internet light is back.
- Printer. Turn it off with its power button, wait 30 seconds, turn it on. Wait for a solid Wi-Fi light.
- iPhone. Restart it, then check that it rejoined the right network.
This clears most “it worked yesterday” problems, because every device gets a fresh connection and announces itself again.
6. Rejoin Wi-Fi on your iPhone
Open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap ⓘ next to your network, tap Forget This Network, then join it again with the password. On the same screen you can turn off Limit IP Address Tracking as a test (it also pauses iCloud Private Relay on that network). Printing usually works with it on, but on some networks it can get in the way. Switch it back on afterward.
7. Check the router and printer settings
These take a few more minutes, but they fix the stubborn cases.
- Client or AP isolation. Some routers have a setting called client isolation, AP isolation or wireless isolation that stops Wi-Fi devices from seeing each other. It should be off on the network you print from.
- Bonjour and AirPrint on the printer. Type the printer’s IP address into Safari to open its built-in settings page. Under Network or Protocols, make sure AirPrint and Bonjour (sometimes called mDNS) are enabled.
- Firmware. Update the printer from its control panel or web page. Makers regularly fix Wi-Fi and AirPrint bugs this way.
8. Reset Network Settings, as a last resort
You’ll need to re-enter every Wi-Fi password
This erases all saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords on your iPhone, plus VPN settings.
Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings, then rejoin your Wi-Fi and try again.
Get the printer on Wi-Fi first
If the printer is new, was moved, or your router or Wi-Fi password changed, the printer itself may not be on your network at all. Your iPhone can’t find it until it is.
-
Use the printer’s Wi-Fi setup
On printers with a screen, open the Network, Wireless or Wi-Fi menu and choose the setup wizard. Pick your network and enter the password. Use the 2.4 GHz network if your router shows two names.
-
No screen? Use WPS or the setup mode
Many printers without a screen can join with the router’s WPS button, or go into a Wi-Fi setup mode for a few minutes. The printer’s manual lists the button combination for your model.
-
Confirm it’s connected
The Wi-Fi light should stay solid. Print a network configuration page to check the network name and IP address.
Setting up with Printer
Printer can’t put a printer on Wi-Fi by itself — the printer joins from its control panel, with WPS or with the maker’s app. Printer’s Printer Wi-Fi setup screen in Settings shows the steps for your model.
Notes by printer brand
HP
HP Smart has been replaced by the HP app, which needs an HP account for full functionality. You don’t need either one to print with AirPrint. If you only used HP Smart to print, see what to use instead. For more on HP setup, see print from iPhone to an HP printer.
Epson
Check the exact model first. Some budget Epson ink-tank models don’t support AirPrint, including many L-series models and some entry-level EcoTank models. For Wi-Fi setup, Epson points people to Smart Panel on selected newer models and iPrint on others. See which Epson app you need and print from iPhone to an Epson printer.
Canon
Some Canon owners have reported their printer disappearing from iPhone after an iOS update, for example in this Canon Community thread. Update the firmware and restart the router and printer. More in print from iPhone to a Canon printer.
Brother
Brother Wi-Fi printers generally support AirPrint, and many also have Wi-Fi Direct, which is handy when the router is the problem. See print from iPhone to a Brother printer.
If it started after an iOS update
iOS 27 was released on September 14, 2026. After big updates some people find their printer gone. In one Apple Community thread, a printer lost after the iOS 26 update came back after it was reconnected to the network; others fixed the same problem by restarting the router and printer or updating the printer’s firmware. Start with step 5 and step 6, then update the printer’s firmware.
Questions people ask
Why does my printer show up on my iPhone sometimes and not other times?
Usually the printer goes into deep sleep and drops off Wi-Fi, or it has a weak signal and keeps reconnecting. Turn off the deepest sleep or auto-off setting, move the printer closer to the router, and reserve its IP address in the router.
Why can my laptop print but my iPhone can’t find the printer?
Your laptop may be connected by USB, on a different network or band, or using a driver that finds the printer by IP address. iPhone relies on AirPrint discovery on the same Wi-Fi, so check the network name on both devices and that AirPrint is on in the printer’s settings.
Do I need to install a driver or the printer maker’s app?
No. iPhone has no printer drivers, and AirPrint printers work without any app. Brand apps can help with first-time Wi-Fi setup, ink levels and scanning, but you don’t need one to print.
My printer shows as “Offline” or the job never prints. Is that the same problem?
Not quite. If your iPhone can see the printer, discovery works and the job itself is stuck. Follow print job stuck on iPhone instead.
Can my iPhone connect to a printer that isn’t on Wi-Fi?
Yes, if it’s plugged into your router with a network cable — your iPhone just needs to be on that router’s Wi-Fi. Otherwise use Wi-Fi Direct or Personal Hotspot if the printer supports them. See how to print from iPhone without Wi-Fi.
